Employability Skills
Learning Outcomes and Application This unit of competency specifies the skills and knowledge required to finish placed and screeded concrete surfaces to specified finish requirements, including edge finishing.It includes manual and mechanical finishing techniques applied to concrete on commercial, residential and civil construction sites.It applies to concreters working as members of a team with at least a moderate degree of autonomy. They would be expected to complete routine activities without close supervision.Licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit of competency in all states and territories except Tasmania. Relevant state and territory regulatory authorities should be consulted to confirm these requirements.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Elements of Competency Performance Criteria              
Element: Plan and prepare to finish concrete.
  • Review and clarify task to finish concrete.
  • Review task specifications and check to make sure they are in accordance with legislation, regulations and codes of practice.
  • Review work health and safety (WHS) requirements for the task in accordance with safety plans and policies.
  • Identify safety signage and barricade requirements.
  • Review environmental requirements for the task in accordance with environmental plans and legislative requirements.
  • Select plant, tools and equipment, check for serviceability and rectify or report any faults.
       
Element: Apply concrete finishing techniques.
  • Erect identified safety signage and barricades, and fit personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Leave concrete untouched until bleed water has come to the surface and evaporated.
  • Assess surface of concrete during curing process and maintain level surface to allow manual and mechanical trowelling to be applied.
  • Assess strength of setting concrete using a basic thumb test to ensure weight of mechanical trowel and operator can be accommodated.
  • Apply mechanical trowelling in multiple overlapping lines to consolidate and densify the setting concrete surface.
  • Install control joints, finish edges, and trowel concrete to specifications.
  • Finish concrete in accordance with job specifications.
       
Element: Clean up after finishing concrete.
  • Clear work area and dispose of, reuse or recycle materials in accordance with legislation, regulations, codes of practice and task requirements.
  • Clean, check, maintain and store tools and equipment in accordance with manufacturers’ specifications and workplace requirements.

Assessment Tasks
